Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary

Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary

Of the four sanctuaries that exist in Goa, Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary is the most spectacular and largest one that covers 240 Sq kms of moist deciduous woodland.

Black panthers that inhabit the high ground can be seen at the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary besides the other usual wildlife that can be seen such as toddy cat, Bison, wild dogs, hyena, sloth bear and many others. Also from the neighboring jungles many elephants and tigers wander in.

There are a number of attractions for sightseeing such as the Dudhsagar waterfalls, the Mahadeva temple at Tambdi Surla and the Devil's Canyon. Near the sanctuary gate the two watchtowers along with the jungle tracks leading to the Devil's Canyon, hold a bonanza for birdwatchers and one can also see a lot of wild animals here.

The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the non rainy season as in the rains the jungle is slippery and the jungle trails are leech infested. There is a resort with a restaurant near the sanctuary at Molem for overnight staying that is quite good and offers multi cuisine. One can also, with prior permission on the Range forest Officer, camp overnight in the jungle.
